Write Salary HistoryJob seekers often need to present their salary history to employers who request them when they forward their resumes. And when it comes to writing a salary history most of us get puzzled on what to write on salary history, how to write a salary history, what to mention and what not. There is nothing to worry about when you write a salary history on your resume (only when it is asked about). That is because there are number of ways by which job seekers can write or present their salary histories to employers who request them to provide information about their previous salaries.

Usually we consider the question, "How much do you earn?" a rude question and in most circumstances it is not asked by people. But when it comes to applying for your dream job this may be a common question if you are already working somewhere or you have an experience at some other company/organization. In such a situation most of the candidates find themselves at a loss as how to write a salary history. How to answer this question? Most of us will honestly and dutifully mention or write salary histories on the resumes without a single thought.

But, before you write salary history there are some considerations as well. The best way to deal with such situations is to defer the subject till you gain more facts on it. For instance, while applying for the job you mention your salary history on the resume and send it off. Now this resume would first be handled by the receptionist, then picked up by HR coordinator and ultimately it will be passed to the hiring manager. He/she would judge you based on your experience and the salary expectations you make. If he decides that you are not fit for the job, you application would be rejected, but your salary history would be viewed by at least three people there.

On the other hand if you would have written on the bottom of cover letter something like - 'Salary history is confidential and only to be supplied in the interview', things would have been different. Since your salary expectations would be missing, the hiring manager would judge from your experience and perhaps in the quest to learn about your salary expectation may call you for the interview. In the interview you can postpone the salary history discussion and rather inquire about the salary range they are offering for the position.

There are certain things to consider before you sit to write salary history.

  • Always verify the job's ambit before you disclose your salary history and expectation. It is a smart way to deal with the situation. It is difficult for everyone to discuss reward till you have adequate information about the position you applied for and responsibilities you would carry.
  • Little bit of research on the job market about the position will give you a fair idea about how much the job is worth. You should learn about the going rate for the position for a person with the level of your skills and experience.
  • Consider the perfect time to disclose your salary history. Delay the process till you are sure about the employer's interest in you.
  • It is good to reveal salary history at some point in the interview process but delaying would give you more control. Once you are confirmed that there is a sincere approach from them to offer, you can be really on a firm ground to discuss the salary and tell your previous history as well.
