You have been working for long in the company or organization and feel that you deserve more. So you decide to ask for salary raise. That is good, but have you thought about how you would ask for that salary raise? Waiting and sitting around for your boss to come with the offer has clearly not worked so far, so it is time for you to ask for that salary raise. But before you go ask for that salary raise, here are few tips that will help you get the best deal. Make a research to find out how much others working in the same position are earning: This is the first thing you should do before you ask for salary raise. Learn the typical salary packages that others are drawing in the same field. There are some sites which can help you to determine the average salary for your position. If you are working in a professional association, perhaps the organization's website can give you ideas. Figure out what you can earn: Before asking for salary raise you must determine what your potential is and where you stand to earn your expectations. To find this out, consider the number of years you have worked in the field, the time for which you have been working for your current employer and what your experiences are. Count on the skills you have achieved through your experience of work. Don't forget to evaluate the financial condition of your employer: If you know about your employer facing financial problems or the company facing loss, then don't ask for a salary raise. That won't be the right time for you to ask for a salary raise. But simply don't rely on office grapevine, do some company research your self to find out how true the financial reports are. Make a list of your arguments: You have to prepare before you negotiate. You should know your stuff of work, your duties, the fair market price for the same position others are getting and how you work for that pay raise. Make a list of likely reasons that your boss or financial manager would give you not to bring in pay raises. It is important to make rebutters to those objections so that you can negotiate well. Think in a way as if selling yourself. Make a list of all your achievements and how you can do more to the company. Such highlighting would increase your value and the employer would be compelled to think on your application of a salary raise. Be prepared what to do if you get turned down and don't get salary raise: Before you go to ask for a salary raise, think what you will do if your boss says, 'No' or he may agree to give you a small raise but at a later date. Try to find out the reason why your salary raise request is rejected. If you think that injustice has been done to you by rejecting your offer, you can think of going where your work is appreciated and you get the right value for your work. |
